Where do penguins live?


Penguins love ice and they love the sea. You never see a penguin sunbathing!

Penguins live in the southern half of the world. You can find them on the shores of Antarctica. Antarctica is a very large area covered in ice.

It's too cold for people, but perfect for penguins.

Do penguins live in other places?

Penguins also live in the south of :

  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • America
  • Africa.
There is ice in Canada and the Arctic. But penguins don't live in the northern half of the world.

Do any penguins live in the north?

The most northerly place that penguins live is on the Galapagos Islands. The Galapagos Islands are near Ecuador in South America.

Penguins do not usually live near people. But they are not afraid of us. We can watch penguins more easily than most birds.

How do penguins keep warm?

Penguins live in cold places. They have thick layers of fat and feathers. This helps to keep their bodies warm.

Do penguins fly through the water ?

No - but they do swim very fast. And they can swim for up to 100 kilometres without a rest.
