Willow's owner Jamie Squires said they "couldn't believe it" when they received a voicemail from the cat-shelter saying their pet was alive, the New York Times reports. They told them Willow had been found wandering the streets by a man who kindly took her to a shelter.
'My husband said, "Don't say anything to the kids yet. We have to make sure. But then we saw the picture, and it was Willow. It's been so long,' she explained.
"To be honest, there are ... coyotes around here, and owls … She was just a little thing, five and a half pounds [2.5 kilograms]. We put out the 'Lost Cat' posters … but we ... thought she'd been eaten by coyotes."
When Willow disappeared the Squires had two children, now aged 10 and 17. She has not met their third child, who is three.
Willow, now weighs 7 pounds. She is healthy and clearly has not spent her life on the streets. Official pictures of her since being found do seem to suggest she has a grumpy side.
The family are working with the rescue centre, who are arranging transportation for Willow back to Colorado.
'The kids can't wait to see her,' Mrs Squires said.
'And we still have her little Christmas stocking.'
