Are there many different types of bat?

There are nearly 1,000 different species of bats.

Are all bats nocturnal?

Yes, bats hunt at night. In the day they sleep.

What do bats eat?

Different bats eat different things. Many bats eat fruit and seeds. Others eat insects, fish, frogs & small animals.

Bats are hungry mammals. Some can eat 1,200 insects in a just one hour!

Are bats blind?

No. This is the great myth about bats. Bats have good eyesight for daytime.

But they do have very poor night vision. They rely on something called echolation for hunting.

Do bats have good hearing?

Bats have the best hearing of all land mammals.  They often have huge ears .  

Which are the biggest bats?

The golden-capped fruit bat is probably the biggest. It has a wing-span the size of a tall child! But it only weighs around 1.2 kg or 3 lbs. That's probably less than your school bag.
