Are there many different types of owl?
There are over 150 species of owl. They live in every part of the world except Antarctica.
Are all owls nocturnal?
No. Some species are not nocturnal. The pygmy owl, for example, is active in the early morning. The short-eared owl likes the afternoon.
Why can owls fly silently?
They have special feathers. These stop the wings from making a noise.
Which are the biggest owls?
Great Horned owls. The Eurasian Eagle is perhaps the biggest.
And the smallest?
Elf owls are the smallest. (see left)
How do owls eat?
Like all birds, owls don’t have teeth. They swallow mice and other small animals without chewing.
Are owls blind?
No. During the day their eyesight is not great. But at night it is very good.
Why do owls have good hearing?
Their ears are unusual. One is higher than the other.
Can an owl move his eyes?
No. But he can move his head. He turns his head to see.
